What is Net Metering? Nevada
Jul 18, 2024In the ever-evolving world of renewable energy, net metering stands out as a key policy that empowers homeowners and businesses to maximize the benefits of their solar panel installations. For Nevada residents, understanding net metering is essential to making the most of solar energy investments. At Aspen Electric, we believe in educating our customers about this critical concept to help them save money and contribute to a greener future.
Understanding Net Metering
Net metering is a billing mechanism that allows customers who generate their own electricity from solar power to feed the excess electricity they do not use back into the grid. In return, they receive credit on their electricity bills. This system ensures that solar energy system owners only pay for their “net” energy usage—the difference between the energy they consume from the grid and the energy they produce.
How Net Metering Works
Here’s a simple breakdown of how net metering operates:
- Solar Power Generation: Your solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours. When your system produces more electricity than your home or business consumes, the excess power is sent back to the grid.
- Metering Credits: The excess energy you generate is measured by your utility meter, which runs backward, giving you credits.
- Energy Consumption: When your solar panels aren’t producing enough electricity (such as at night or on cloudy days), you draw power from the grid. The credits you’ve accumulated offset the cost of this grid power.
Benefits of Net Metering
Net metering offers numerous advantages for solar energy users in Nevada:
- Cost Savings: By offsetting your energy use with credits, you can significantly reduce your electricity bills.
- Environmental Impact: Net metering encourages the use of renewable energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Energy Independence: Generating your own electricity provides greater control over your energy use and costs.
- Support for Solar Growth: Net metering policies help stimulate the solar market, creating jobs and promoting economic growth within the renewable energy sector.
Net Metering in Nevada
Nevada’s net metering policies are governed by Assembly Bill 405 (AB 405), passed in 2017. This bill set a tiered rate structure for net metering, designed to gradually decrease the compensation rates as the installed capacity of net metering systems increases.
- Tier 1 (95% of the retail rate): This rate applied to customers who signed up for net metering from June 15, 2017, until the combined capacity of net metering systems reached 80 megawatts. Customers are locked in at this rate for 20 years.
- Tier 2 (88% of the retail rate): Opened in August 2018 and closed in June 2019 after reaching the 80-megawatt capacity limit.
- Tier 3 (81% of the retail rate): This tier was available from June 2019 to June 2020.
- Tier 4 (75% of the retail rate): Currently active, this rate applies indefinitely unless modified by legislative action. There is no capacity limit for Tier 4.
Why Net Metering Matters
Net metering is not just beneficial for individual solar users; it also supports the broader electricity grid. By allowing excess solar energy to be fed back into the grid, net metering helps stabilize the demand curve, reduces strain on distribution systems, and minimizes energy losses during transmission. This, in turn, benefits all electricity consumers by promoting a more efficient and resilient energy system.
